Detroit Casino Surpasses $1B In 2021 Sales

The Michigan Game Control Board (MGCB) released earnings data that the Detroit-based casino reported revenue of $1.294 billion for 2021.

Revenue totals for 2021 totaled $639 million in 2020, up more than 100%. However, that still falls short of the casino's pre-pandemic revenue totals for 2019, which hit a record $1.454 billion.

Slots generated $998.8 million, or 77% of total casino revenue, during 2021, and table games accounted for 21% of revenue, with games such as Blackjack and Roulette generating a combined $268 million in revenue for all casinos. It was also a successful year for sports betting as the casino's sports books generated a total of $26.95 million in revenue.

Slot and table games combined year-on-year revenue increased 104.2% to $1.27 billion. As a result, the three casinos paid $102.6 million in betting taxes to Michigan, a significant increase from $50.3 million they paid in 2020. The MGCB report provides a market share analysis for each casino's slot and table games as follows:

MGM Grand Detroit — 43% ($554 million)

MotorCity Casino — 35% ($438.3 million)

Greektown Casino — 22% (274.5 million)

According to the report, the three casinos reported combined retail sports betting eligibility of $26.95 million in adjusted total receipts.

MGM - $8.79 million

Motor City - $8.69 million

Greektown - $9.47 million

As a result, sports betting taxes rose 44.9% to $1 million in 2021 from a total of $698,865 in 2020. Sports betting taxes paid to the city of Detroit amounted to $1.26 million.
